Chapter Nine
Wren tried not to allow the mentioning of her ring, in essence, the mentioning of Phillip dampen her time with Torrence. When the food came, that helped alleviate what Wren felt was awkward silence between them. They rarely had that moment when they couldnât talk through anything, yet, this time, Wren knew it was all her.
âHowâs your food?â Torrence asked after watching Wren rock side to side as she ate.
âAs good as I remember,â Wren smiled, with a jaw full of hot buttery waffles.
âDo you still hum when you eat?â Torrence teased.
âI donât hum,â Wren defended, putting her hand in front of her mouth as she finished chewing.
âOh, I forgot, you dance,â Torrence trilled.
âNo, buddy, thatâs you,â Wren clapped back, doing a little shimmy in her seat, mimicking what Torrence supposedly did.
They both laughed. It felt good to laugh.
âSo, when are you going to let your parents know youâre here?â Torrence asked as he wiped the corners of his mouth with a napkin.
âI wanna see them, but I donât want to spend too many days there,â Wren admitted. âYou know how that goes,â Wren continued, âfalling into old patterns, the stuff I left home for in the beginning.â
Torrence did know what she meant. They talked about it a lot when they were in school. The one thing that gave Wren a lot of grief and doubts was if she did the right thing by leaving home so early. He was glad her mood lightened some. Torrence wanted that to continue.
âSo basically, you came home to see me,â Torrence crooned with a slight pitch to his brow.
âMaybe,â Wren confessed, taking a napkin to dab the corners of her mouth. She leaned back on the cushion of the booth seat, her belly full. There was a moment as the two friends sat across from each other. There was something in Torrenceâs manner that always soothed Wren and made her feel like no matter what, everything would be okay. It was a reassuring feeling; one she didnât realize she missed as much as she did now. Torrence was always good to Wren. Heâd consistently been there for Wren. For Torrence, Wren was still beautiful; flawless mocha skin, incredible eyes that mirrored the depths of her precious soul, bespectacled. He liked a woman with glasses. But Wren was so much more than just physically beautiful. Torrence knew that from the moment he met her. He was reminded of that now as his eyes came up to study her exquisite face.
âWill there be anything else?â The waiter asked, momentarily breaking the entrancement.
Torrence regained Wrenâs eyes. âAnything else?â
âNo, Iâm good,â she answered, feeling the depth of Torrenceâs gaze. Wrenâs lids slipped down over her eyes as she looked away.
âIâll take the check,â Torrence replied to the waiter. He couldnât stop looking at her even as the waiter stood nearby. Where he had been able to keep things in perspective before, keeping their friendship at the forefront of his mind, Torrence seemed to struggle with that now.
